Oil Painting Animals with Penelope Gilbert-Ng -- Materials List
Brushes----- Flat 1”, ½”, 1 rigger plus any that you have already
Palette------ reasonably large. A piece of ply ( I don’t particularly like a white palette due to tonal mixing confusion, so a medium tone palette is best. mid grey or brown wood) Always season new wood with linseed oil or undercoat with paint to avoid the palette sucking oil out of paint, no ice-cream lids please
Palette Knife. The trowel type for painting and mixing, medium size
*Liquin medium.. Linseed oil can be used instead
*Art Spectrum Lean Medium
*Langridge Low Toxic Paint Medium (odourless)
Odourless Solvent A small container with lid to put solvent in, lots of rag or paper towels (Viva brand is the best)
One of the above mediums marked Red *
Small container or dipper or jar lid for solvent.
Easels
Cloth to cover the table
Paints
*Titanium White
* Raw umber
*Aurora Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Pale
*Cadmium lemon
Yellow Ochre Pale
*Permanent Rose or Magenta
Winsor Red or Cadmium Red I use *Cadmium Scarlet in people portraiture
*Cobalt Blue light
*French Ultramarine Blue
*French Ultramarine violet
*Terra Verte
*Viridian
( * ) these colours I use for Human Portraiture
Bring the colours you like to use as long as there are warm and cool variations in reds, yellow and blues. No black we mix blacks. If you do use black then Ivory black as good mixer with yellows to make greens.
Canvas
A canvas or canvas board or canvas paper (you will need a support for paper and clips) I shall be using Ampersand gessobord any small size as in---size 18” X 14” 12”x12” 6"x6"or 14” X 10” Small is easier to control so a smaller size is better depending on your previous knowledge on oil. This enables you to finish the painting on the day.)
Sketch book for notes and sketches. Charcoal stick (Willow) and biro.
Apron
Fitted rubber gloves or barrier cream
Mahl stick
Animal portrait photos. Good to use an iPad with images on it as you can enlarge to see any detail needed. Photocopies aren’t good to work from. No images from book or magazines Use own images.
Your enthusiasm most essential.
